How this list was checked

New York City exempts self-service washes from the car wash licence: you only need one where staff clean the car. So a tax parcel classed GW in the city's PLUTO land-use data with no active consumer-affairs licence is a strong self-serve signal, and one with a licence is almost certainly staffed or automatic — the opposite of what you'd guess. Land area against building area then separates open wand bays from a tunnel. But the strongest screen turned out to be the review text itself, and the tell is the pronoun — who does the verb. “You can wash your car yourself”, “scrub your own car”: a bay. “They dried it”, “hand washed”: staffed. That test overturned five earlier rulings on this page. Fuel-brand station locators are not used as a veto: they list only their own amenities, so a bay run by a separate tenant on the same lot is invisible to them, and absence from one is not evidence of absence. Anything still unproven stays off this page.

How solid are the gaps?#

Where this list says a borough or a corridor has nothing, that means nothing was found — not that someone walked it. The two are worth telling apart.

Manhattan having none is a strong finding. Four separate sweeps, a land-use screen and a licence screen all came back empty, and the reason is structural: an open canopy lot cannot pay Manhattan ground rent.

Individual corridor sweeps are weaker. They were done from listings, imagery and property records rather than by driving them, so a bay with no listing, no reviews and no street-level photograph would survive undetected. Twelve Brooklyn parcels that fit the physical signature are still unchecked.

So an entry here is only as good as its evidence, and an absence is only as good as the search behind it. The twelve unchecked Brooklyn parcels are the likeliest place for a bay to be hiding — they carry the right physical signature and nobody has stood in front of them.
