Touchless(ish) Car Care — Quick Start Guide (NYC, no-hose edition)

Tier 1 of 3Curbside rinseless — most days

Have a hose? Everything here works with a hose too — a quick top-down hose rinse replaces the bay/rain step before any wipe, and you can skip the 'gritty → find a bay' detour.

Goal: Keep a mostly-dusty commuter clean with minimal effort and minimal contact with the paint, using rain and touchless bays as the rinse and one rinseless product for everything else.

The one rule: Let water do the work. Only touch the paint when it's clean enough to touch safely.

Good news for NYC: the tap water is soft, so no distilled water needed and water-spotting is a minor concern. Still dry the car rather than letting it bake in the sun.

The kit (one wash product does it all)#

Dilutions (ONR W&W): - Bucket: 1 oz per 2 gal (1:256) - Sprayer pre-spray: ~1 oz per gal (1:128) → about ½ oz in the 50 oz IK tank. Go 1:64 for a dirtier car. - Never add regular car shampoo to bulk up foam.

Step 0 — One-time reset (do this once, properly)#

  1. Get the car properly clean: touchless bay top-down rinse, then a full ONR W&W wash at home (below).
  2. Optional but worth it: clay mitt with ONR as lube to pull embedded grit — paint should feel glass-smooth.
  3. Dry fully.
  4. Optional: one coat of a spray ceramic sealant if you want stronger self-cleaning in the rain. Otherwise the ONR W&W layer builds up over the first few washes.

Step 1 — Ongoing: what to do based on the weather#

Heavy or steady rain expected → Do nothing. Let it rinse. Afterward, inspect (Step 2).

Light drizzle / no rain, car looking dusty → Touchless bay or self-serve pressure washer: 1. Rinse top-down, wand ~12–18 in from paint. 2. Pre-soak/foam setting if available, dwell 1–2 min (don't let it dry), rinse top-down. 3. Skip the foam brush. 4. Spot-free rinse if offered; otherwise dry at home (Step 3).

Bugs, bird droppings, tar, tree sap → Handle within a day or two regardless of weather. Soak with remover or quick detailer, let it soften, lift (don't scrub) with a wet microfiber.

Step 2 — Inspect after rain or a rinse#

Run a fingertip (or hand in a thin plastic bag) over a lower door panel.

Step 3 — The ONR Wash & Wax wipe (only when grit-free)#

  1. Pre-spray the car with the IK sprayer (1:128 mix). Work in shade; don't let it dry. Dwell 1–2 min.
  2. Bucket: ~2 gal water + ONR W&W at 1:256, Dirt Trap in the bottom. Drop towels in.
  3. Wipe top-down, one straight pass per towel side, very light pressure. Fold to a fresh side often. Dirtiest areas (lower doors, rear bumper) last with their own towel.
  4. Dry each panel right after wiping with a clean, dry towel — this buffs the wax layer in.
  5. Glass — see below.
  6. Wheels last, own towel, never reused on paint.

Bucket habits: rinse the towel/sponge right in the bucket — ONR is designed to release dirt and drop it to the bottom, and the Dirt Trap keeps it there. Keep the towel/sponge just dripping, not soaked and not wrung dry. Dump and rinse the bucket after every wash — rinseless water with dirt in it gets funky if it sits.

Towels vs. sponge: a stack of plush microfiber (flip to a fresh side often) or one Ultra Black Sponge (dunk, wipe, flip, dunk) both work. Sponge is simpler for a one-bucket wash; use whichever you're comfortable with.

Very light dust only? Skip the bucket: pre-spray, wipe with a plush towel, buff dry. Same product, waterless-style.

Glass (avoid the smear)#

The wax in ONR W&W can haze windshields under wipers or in low sun. Pick one: - Simplest: do glass with a well-wrung towel, then immediately buff with the dry glass towel. - Most reliable: after the wash, one quick pass of glass cleaner on the windshield and rear glass with the dedicated glass towel. 30 seconds. - Side windows and mirrors: the wax film helps water roll off — leave it. - If wipers ever smear later, one pass of glass cleaner resets it. - Interior glass: never use W&W inside — the wax film is what causes greasy nighttime glare. Use glass cleaner (or plain ONR blue at 1:64) and the dedicated glass towel.

Winter (road salt) variation#

Same routine, one hard rule added: salt and winter crust get rinsed off before anything touches the paint. Salt is abrasive as crystals and corrosive as brine, and it hides in the lower panels, wheel wells, and underbody.

Step 4 — Keep the protection alive#

What NOT to do#

Cheat sheet#

Situation Do
Rain coming Nothing. Let it rinse.
Dusty, no rain Touchless bay, top-down rinse
After rain/rinse, smooth ONR W&W pre-spray → bucket wipe → dry → glass cleaner on windshield
After rain/rinse, gritty Rinse again first — no wiping
Just light dust ONR W&W spray-and-wipe, no bucket
Bugs / bird droppings Soak and lift now
Windshield hazing Glass cleaner, dedicated towel
Winter / road salt Bay rinse incl. underbody FIRST, then normal ONR wipe (or rinse only if freezing)
Want stronger beading Optional spray ceramic after a wash

When something changes, I'll tell you what and where

A bay gets verified, the wash log contradicts a guide, a product I recommend changes formula — that's when a note goes out, and it says what changed and which page it changed on. Roughly monthly, often less, sometimes not for a season. No sequence, no course, nothing to buy.
