How often do you actually need to wash off road salt?

Not after every storm. Salt does its damage as brine, in specific places, under specific conditions — so the answer is a trigger, not a ritual.

The advice you'll find is "wash your car often in winter." Nobody says how often, because the honest answer isn't a number on its own. Salt doesn't damage a car steadily the way sun does. It does damage in bursts, in particular places, when particular conditions line up — and once you know which conditions, the schedule mostly writes itself.

This is about when. For what a salt wash actually consists of with no hose and no driveway, that's Winter road salt with no hose.

Dry salt is not doing much#

Sodium chloride sitting on cold, dry metal is close to inert. It needs water to become an electrolyte, and it's the electrolyte that carries the current between two bits of dissimilar metal and turns one of them into rust. No moisture, no circuit.

Which is why a car that's been driven on salted roads through a week of hard freeze, and looks appalling, may be doing better than one that looks fine after a mild wet Tuesday. The white crust is the visible part and it is not the dangerous part.

The dangerous state is brine — salt in solution, wet, and above freezing. That's when corrosion runs, and it runs faster the warmer it gets.

Modern road treatment made this worse#

Cities increasingly pre-treat roads with liquid brine before a storm rather than dropping rock salt after it, and the mixes often use magnesium chloride or calcium chloride rather than plain sodium chloride.

Two consequences for your car, both bad:

It arrives already in solution. It doesn't need to dissolve first — it goes straight into seams, sprays up into cavities, and wicks into places a dry crystal would never reach.

It's hygroscopic. Calcium and magnesium chloride pull moisture out of the air and stay damp at humidity levels where plain salt would have dried out and stopped working. That's the entire point of using them — it's what keeps a road wet and ice-free below freezing — and it means the brine on your subframe can stay in its active state far longer than a dry-looking winter would suggest.

So the intuition "it's cold and dry, the salt is dormant" is less reliable than it used to be.

It isn't really about the paint#

Paint is a barrier, and a modern clearcoat is a good one. Salt sitting on an intact painted panel isn't the emergency; it's ugly, and it will dull the finish, but it isn't eating anything.

Corrosion starts where there's a path to bare metal, and in winter that's overwhelmingly underneath: frame rails, subframe, suspension components, brake and fuel lines, the inside of rocker panels, wheel arches, and the seams and pinch welds where two panels meet and moisture has somewhere to sit. Add every stone chip on the lower doors and the leading edge of the hood.

That reframes the question. "How often should I wash the car" is the wrong version. The right one is how often does the underside need rinsing — and the answer to that is not the same as how often the paint needs to look clean.

The trigger is a thaw, not a storm#

Here's the rule that replaces the ritual:

Wash after the first thaw that follows a salting event — not after the storm itself.

Through the freeze, brine on the underbody is cold and comparatively slow. When the temperature comes up above freezing and the roads go wet, everything reactivates at once: residue in the wheel arches goes back into solution, and the corrosion rate climbs with the temperature.

That thaw is the moment the accumulated salt actually starts working. It's also, conveniently, the moment washing outdoors stops being miserable and a self-serve bay isn't frozen shut.

So, a frequency#

With the trigger doing most of the work, the background schedule is simple: roughly every one to two weeks while the roads are being treated, pulled earlier by a thaw and pushed later by a sustained dry freeze.

That's a range on purpose. Precision here would be fake — it depends on how much you drive, whether your commute is highway or local, how aggressively your area treats, and whether the car sits outside overnight. What isn't vague is the priority: if you only do one thing, do the underbody.

The short version#

Salt does its damage wet, warm, and underneath. Wash on the thaw, aim underneath, and go by the calendar only in between. Every week or two through the season, sooner when it warms up, and the paint can wait its turn.

Have a hose? Your advantage here is the underbody, and it's a real one. A hose with a decent nozzle plus something that reaches beneath the car — an undercarriage lance, or even a lawn sprinkler run under it for a few minutes — does the most important part of this at home, on the day of the thaw, instead of whenever you next reach a bay. The timing above doesn't change. You just get to act on it the same afternoon.
